Seeing ‘Red’

Funny little tidbit that almost got lost in the flood yesterday. As I stepped onto the platform for the 8:16, little idea what commuting confusion awaited me, I spied Little Red Running Late.
Little Red Running Late (LRRL) is a nice red-haired lady at my station. She’s always running late with a giant rollie suitcase in tow. Months ago, she pulled over and gave me a ride when we were both running late, essentially sacrificing any chance she had of making the train but helping me do so. And she doesn’t even know me–other than me being the guy that’s helped lug her giant rollie suitcase up or down the stairs two or three times.
I said hi to Little Red, protective as always of the pleasurable fact that no one at my station knows me, and I know no one. She returns the hi and a smile, takes two steps past me, and stops.
“You’re not Neil, are you?” she asks.
“No,” I say, as my name is not, in fact, Neil, Neal, Kneel, or anything close.
“I gave Neil a ride to the train once,” she continues. “He sent me the nicest thank you note. I thought it might’ve been you.”
I made a joke about my substandard command of modern politesse, we smiled again, and Little Red went on her way.
