Newspapers are of course having a tough time these days, and things aren’t much rosier for the stands that sell the archaic broadsheets.
I drove by little Hawthorne station on Saturday and saw four yellow Town of Mount Pleasant vehicles: two giant diggers, a pickup truck, and some other vehicle whose purpose I couldn’t quite figure out. Their weekend mission? Remove the concrete newsstand that’s been situated at the northern end of the station, next to the tracks, for eons. The ugly brown thing had not been used in years–certainly not since I’d started commuting out of Hawthorne over three years ago.
So good riddance. But really–two diggers and four total town vehicles? That’s a nice chunk of overtime.
One of the diggers was still there today, chained up next to the former newsstand. Wonder if something else is going up in the space. What’s the equivalent of the modern newsstand…a kiosk that sells iPhones?

A STARBUCKS, of course…
