We’ve toasted the town of Mount Pleasant for installing crosswalks and Slow the F*** Down, There Are Children Walking About signs around the hamlet of Hawthorne; in fact, we pass through either two or three such crosswalks on the way to the station each day, depending on where we park. We think they serve as effective reminders to motorists that people occasionally use the roads in ways other than steering 5,000 pounds of gas-propelled steel.
We’ll were chugging home Friday on the bicycle, thinking about the evening’s first Dogfish IPA and the weekend ahead. We were approaching the crosswalk on Memorial and Chelsea, a block north from the elementary school driveway.
A black SUV was seriously chugging up Chelsea behind us, so we went way over to within inches of the curb, slowed the bike down, and waved the car past.
The woman driving didn’t simply pass us; no, she stepped on the gas, went to the left of the State Law: Stop For Pedestrians at Crosswalk pylon in the middle of the street, and passed us on the side of the street dedicated to cars going the opposite direction.
Thank you, ma’am, and you have a nice weekend.
