Metro-North and Long Island Railroad?

An ambitious proposal to overhaul our transit system was put forth yesterday by Mayor Bloomberg. Among the proposals are making crosstown buses free because they’re so slow, reports the NY Times, and merging the management of the railroads serving Long Island and Westchester/The Nutmeg State.

Mayor Mike also announced that he’d secured almost $47 million in federal funding to fix up our city’s ferries and piers.

the last thing MNR needs is to merge with the “90% of our retirees are on disability” LIRR. I see the benefits of one entity but the LIRR is a huge mess.

What we really need is a merger that includes NJT. In any civilized nation these operations would have been merged long ago, with compatible re-electrification and through-running at Penn Station that would greatly increase capacity and convenience. Instead, NJT is planning to build a separate terminal adjacent to Penn, which will make through travel even more difficult. Hell, there was better interoperability between East and West Berlin during the cold war….
