JerseyJim: A Soccer Stadium Somewhere in the Swamps of Jersey

Swamp Thing
As the NJT train whips through the Meadowlands each evening, riders on the left side windows are treated to a view of the iron skeleton of the Red Bull Arena, a 25,000-seat soccer stadium in Harrison, NJ.

A full mile east of downtown Newark, and across the bending Passaic River, the stadium seems dwarfed by the freight ships and nearby stacks of empty containers around Newark bay. But as every Cosmos fan knows, and consistent with the long honored example of Giants Stadium: “If you build it in the middle of a swamp, they will come.”

On paper (or Google maps) the location seems ideal — close to Newark Airport and Rutgers, accessible by the PATH station in Harrison. Perhaps an enterprising ferry company or party boat might add this to their river route.

After much delay, the arena is due to open in 2010.

I am new at this and can’t figure out how to post on the home page. Can anyone help? I figured out how to post comments, but I have to repeat myself a lot. I would rather, sometimes, post a comment and see what the responses are. Does that make sense?
This is a cool site and I enjoy it very much.

    P. S.: Don’t forget to go to the MTA / LIRR site and vote for naming the retired shop switchers after Joseph “The Hump” Rutigliano and Edward “Fat Eddy” Koerber, the RRA Scandal twins! I think the contest closes on 30 April. You, too, could win a free trip to Speonk! Check it out!!!

Thanks for the update. As an out of towner I don’t know that much about the New Jersey professional soccer scene.

But I’m probably safe in assuming this will be the home for a New York team.
