Gregory Gaulthier, our Gallic dark-horse pick in the elite squash tournament going down in Grand Central, is in the final after dethroning world #1 squasher Karim Darwish yesterday.
Gaultier overcame a scary case of Very Tight Rails (there’s got to be a train joke there somewhere) to prevail in the seminfinals last night. From the official Tournament of Champions dispatch:
It didn’t look as though this would be Gaultier’s night at the start of the match when Darwish won the first game 11-2 by playing consistent length and very tight rails and waiting for Gaultier to make errors – which he did. Darwish used the same strategy in the second game, but Gaultier made enough winners to offset his errors and the game went to a tiebreak which Gaultier won 12-10.
Gaultier takes on world #10 Nick Matthews, a Briton, in the TOC final tonight at 7:45. If he wins we’ll jubilantly drape the French flag across the top of the blog.
