Neither Snow Nor Sleet Nor the Great Egret Keeps JerseyJim From Work

Just shocked to be here at work. SHOCKED.

NJ Transit rolled on through today’s Wintry Mix without much shrugging or extended Great Egret or bald eagle birdwatching stops in the Meadowlands. The much anticipated inches of snow were pretty heavy out west of NYC, but the Penn Station express pushed through and deposited the usual commuters on time. Shocked.

It was a tough call. We had already gotten the 5:11am call about school closing, and as I was preparing my drive to the train, I hadn’t heard any train whistles yet — not a good sign. And don’t tell my boss, but today’s snow is perfect pack for building a snowman, and sledding down the driveway.

Snow seems much easier on NJT than ice — as last week we had 40-60 minute delays west of Summit, due to a broken down train. As the delays at our station mounted, groups of two and three folks slipped out of the “warming hut” and drove or walked the mile to the Summit station.

Some lucky passengers (including myself) hailed the Union County shuttle bus, and the driver happily made the trip to Summit station. After 15 minutes or so, an empty double-decker pulled up, and we were riding high to work at last — late but warm.
