Safe to Do Harlem Shuffle During Morning Rush?

One thing I love about New Yorkers is their abundant willingness to help strangers with directions. As we know, it’s not because they feel the need to help mankind, or want to ensure that a tourist has as good a trip to the Apple as possible. It’s because they want to show this tourist that they know everything there is to know about New York–where the 4 express stops, which subway goes to the Met, how to find that covert entrance below 30 Rock.

So, fellow New Yorkers, please share your infinite wisdom with reader ‘PCG’.

what is the 125th street metro-north station like from a safety standpoint at 7 a.m. and are there yellow cabs available heading down to 105th street? Fare perhaps $10? Or, is it safe to get the 6 train

125 is pretty safe. not sure abt yellow cabs. black cars should be 10-15. walking to 6 is safe. harlem is not like it used to be. you’ll be pleased to see lots of white ppl and affluent types

Perfectly safe, lots of MNR office people who work uptown get off at 125 th. Yellow cabs are around but maybe not as many as in midtown (plus it’s rush hour). Walk 1 block to the 6 and get off at 103rd, probably faster than a cab anyway.

I live in Harlem and commute using MNR at 125th Street. It is perfectly safe, there are a decent amount of commuters around, coming and going. People tend to mind their own business. One of the benefits of using 125 is there is less foot traffic compared to GCT.
There are the occasional cabs around, but there are always black cars. Not sure how much that would cost, generally the same as a cab. The subway is super close, just one block over. a quick walk.

Definitely safe. Just take the 6 – it won’t even be THAT crowded (where you have to wait for another one) at that stop.
