TV Stations Jam On Commuter News

Not long after WNBC TV launched its NBC New York Traffic Cam service, which sees Channel 4 shoot traffic updates to commuters’ mobile devices, rival Fox 5 is making like an SUV approaching the Holland Tunnel and nudging itself into the race as well. The Fox station has unveiled the New York Traffic Authority, with live cameras spread all over the five boroughs.

Here in Gotham, the stations are all about reaching viewers outside the family room, such as those WNBC or WABC newscasts chirping away in the back of cabs. Toward that end, WNBC will air its local news on PATH trains come October–cuz you can never have too much Sue Simmons and Chuck Scarborough.
