Word of the Week: ELEVADER
Posted by TJ under Uncategorized
ELEVADER /ELL eh VAYD urr/ noun: A witless dolt who invades a full elevator as the doors close, then typically selects a floor that’s lower than yours to further delay your arrival at work.
Usage: I was all set to be on time for my morning meeting, but this elevader sprinted through the lobby and jammed his foot in the doors, forcing them to reopen. I stared at the back of his head until I’d successfully singed his hair.

…here in the (historic) Flatiron building, the elevators were updated in 2003. Prior to that, the original 1902 elevators were soooo slow, that official company policy was to only push an odd floor, and walk the stairs if you worked on an even floor.
Every six months, it would switch to the even floors, and employees that worked on odd floors had to take the stairs to make up the difference.
This seems draconian, but after riding the slow slow elevators twice, it made sense to most folks. The funny thing was when a visitor got on and hit the “wrong” floor - and an audible groan would erupt from the packed elevator. The poor visitor would spend the rest of the slow ride pondering their crime…
