The Best Damn Suburb Period
C’mon, folks, shoot us a vote for the best New York City commuter town around. All y’all schlep past these towns every day and say, Geez, I wish I lived there. (Sort of like Mount Yearnin’, if Mount Vernon was, like, really nice and didn’t have homicides.)
If you could shuffle the deck all over again […]

A Silver Lining
None of this would’ve happened if the 6:10 hadn’t been five minutes late pulling in to Hummerville.
For the second time in three days, I studied the darkening sky as the train lumbered through White Plains, North White, Valhalla. I prayed we’d get to Hummerville before the skies opened up and soaked my sorry ass as […]

The Best Commuting Town in the Tri-State Area
This is long overdue.
“Dane” asks Trainjotting for the best commuting town in the area.
Hello! I was wondering if there was a secret consensus on what the best commuting town into Manhattan is? For instance, if someone could move to any commuting-into-Manhattan town (in NY, PA, CT, or NJ), which town is considered as having the […]

How Come This Never Happens When I’m on the 6?
There’s a very entertaining video of some girls doing Scores-worthy moves on the poles in the subway. As is always the case when people do odd things in public places, the faces of the on-lookers (or, in some cases, the not-lookers) are just short of priceless. We saw indifference, ecstasy and utter distaste.
Also worth noting: […]

Island Residents Ponder Life Without Tram
Residents of Roosevelt Island, that weird little slice of Mayberry smack in the middle of Manhattan and Queens, are not happy to contemplate their tram being shut down for inspection.
Reports the NY Times:
Next spring, the gliding red cars, a part of life on the island since 1976, will be taken out of service for at […]

Road to Somewhere
JerseyJim tells us Mayor Bloomberg kicked off a “Summer Streets” program today, opening up a 7-mile pedestrian/cyclist path from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park on select Saturdays in August. The route goes primary up Park Avenue (as well as 4th Avenue and Park Avenue South) to 72nd Street.
Among those turned up for the […]

“Roach” on the Q Train!
From today’s Metropolitan Diary in the NY Times:
Dear Diary:
On a crowded Q train bound for Manhattan, a woman in gray standing in front of me told a lady in blue next to her that a “roach” was crawling on her shoulder.
The lady in blue flicked the bug in panic, and it flew off, landing on the […]

Garrison Keiller Digs the Harlem Line
“Prairie Home Companion” guy Garrison Keiller performed his lusty ode to the Metro-North at New York’s Town Hall venue recently. “MTA (Mobile Line)” name-checks several stops along the Harlem Line:
The Metro North that runs the big silver trains
Hey lordy mama, mama, hey lordy papa, papa
Runs the big silver trains
Takes you to Bronxville, Scarsdale and White […]

MTA Pays Out $285,000 In Ripped Pants
Metro-North and Long Island Railroad have paid out over $285,000 in claims regarding ripped clothing from the M7 trains’ armrests, reports City Room.
It’s a drop in the bucket of the $1.1 billion…billion…the MTA has paid in claims over the last 12 years, much of it personal injury.
Writes William Neuman:
The claims include $285,046 paid by the […]

CT Gov Demands Bike Storage on New Trains
Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell says the 380 new M-8 cars on order for Metro-North’s New Haven Line should be modified to allow for bike storage, reports the Journal News.
Rell told New Haven Mayor John DeStefano that the design can be modified because the first of the new cars are not scheduled for delivery until next […]
