School Buses Get Tune-Up
Posted by TJ under BusRadio, The Scofflaws
Kids in parts of Massachusetts, Connecticut and other select states are being treated to school buses that feature state-of-the-art sound systems airing current music and boy-girl advice, reports the NY Times, and will soon roll out a feature that sends riders emails or text messages alerting them that the bus is ten minutes from their stop (so, you know, hurry up with that blunt).
That’s a good thing, right? Not so fast. Parents are concerned because little Brian and Brianna are being exposed to advertising, thanks to BusRadio (which, to its credit, does not permit ads from soda or candy marketers, or those selling violent video games).
“It’s an advertising scheme designed to exploit children,” said Robert Weissman, managing director of Commercial Alert… “It’s exactly the opposite of what schools and educational systems should be doing.”
The only complaint from the students? Too much Hannah Montana.
Our finest music-on-the-school-bus memories? I’m sure G. Francis will agree–that late-bus driver “Sam” who wore the funky shades and played in that ska band, inviting us to the front of the bus to hear the likes of Scratch Perry, Prince Buster, and of course his own renegade outfit the Scofflaws.
