Toasting the Irish and Trains
Saluting St. Patrick’s day, the lyrics to “Paddy Works on the Railway”, as was probably performed by the Pogues and Billy Bragg last night (and again tonight) at Roseland.
In eighteen hundred and forty-one
The corduroy breeches I put on
Me corduroy breeches I put on
To work upon the railway, the railway
Im weary of the railway
Poor paddy works […]

‘Columbia Spectator’: Commuting Sucks, Subway Riders Mean
The Columbia Spectator, the student paper showcasing the finest young minds in journalism, has a unique payment policy for writers: The Ivy League rag pays by cliche.
At least that’s one might deduce after reading Zahra Khimji’s “A Peek Into the Life of a Commuter” story. It follows the sad, lonely life of a student named […]

The Wearin’ o’ the Green
Unlike the crowd on board for the Giants parade last month, we didn’t see too many green-clad St. Paddy’s revelers on the 8:43 this morning. A pair of Westchester mooks in matched green t-shirts adorned with the word ‘Irish’ and a giant clover (please pardon the double-redundancy), in matching sideways baseball hats, stepped onto the GCT […]

‘Times’ Staffers’ Commutes Just Got a Little Longer
Thanks to budget cuts and “the increased safety and security of the Times Square area,” the New York Times is scrapping a shuttle service to Penn Station and Grand Central for employees.”
Reads the memo:
“As part of our continuing efforts to reduce spending, we will be discontinuing the late-night shuttle van service that runs between 620 Eighth […]

An Open Letter To:
The high school kids reading the Wall Street Journal on the 8:16 today.
You were both about 18. One of you was a bit rakish–tall, lean, a mop of curly hair that one could envision a recently divorced MILF running her fingers through. The other was a bit more generic: parted hair, the vaguely preppy (chinos, […]

New ‘Mileposts’ Lands
The new edition of the Metro-North monthly newsletter Mileposts was greeting riders on the seats this morning with news of new timetables April 6 (Hudson gets 41 more trains a week, Harlem gets a 5:55 a.m.’er out of North White and New Haven welcomes the 5:57 out of Waterbury), those sky-high approval rates (93% of […]

Take the Train Instead of the Plane
High-speed trains in Europe are starting to nip into the cheap-fare airlines, writes the Wall Street Journal, by offering amenities such as more legroom, faster speeds (almost 200 mph!), cellphone service and DVD rentals.
A rail system called Eurostar has lopped 20 minutes off the ride from London to Paris, while a Spanish railroad knocked a […]

Catch an Iger by the Tail
OK, I was cutting it a wee bit close.
Disney top dog Bob Iger was speaking at 9:15. The 8:16 got me in at 9:04. All I had to do was make my way out that back entrance of Grand Central (By the way, I love the two lanes of traffic on the escalator–express and ‘I’m […]

Biking Through Middle Earth
Here’s some video of me zipping through traffic on my bike yesterday, cutting things way too close en route to the 8:43 train after wasting precious minutes explaining the season finale of The Wire to The Missus (Duquan! A junkie! I’m still heartbroken.).
OK, that’s not me, and that’s not Westchester. In fact, it’s a land […]

Here Comes the Sun
I think everyone on the 5:27 to Mt. Kisco had the same thing on their mind yesterday: This daylight savings time thing sure is sweet.
With the extra hour of sun hitting us fully three weeks earlier than it did two years ago, it warmed the soul to come out of the Grand Central tunnel and […]
