New MTA Timetable: Hudson Line Cements Favorite Son Status
The Hudson Line, the darling of the Metro-North trinity, gets a whopping 41 more trains each week when the spring timetable goes into action April 6.
All told, Metro-North is adding an extra 67 trains each week to keep up with growing–and changing–rider demand.
Besides those sweet river views, the Hudson Line gets 21 additional weekend trains, […]

Straphanger Joe Rides the 7 to Uranus
“Be kind to your behind.”
It’s cottonelle’s new tag line and it’s covering the wall space at the stairs heading to the Grand Central subways and everyone’s talking about it. Whether it’s the poop reporter whose motto is “Your #1 Source for Your #2 Business” or Cassandra Jupiter who is anti-wiping and pro-washing–or Jon Stewart on the Daily […]

Bad Vibes on Good Friday
ConnecticEnergy tells us about an interesting flare-up on the train from Stamford this morning. A woman with no ticket–and, apparently, no money–was getting grilled fairly hard by the conductor. She was giving it back to the conductor with some vehemence as well, enough to yank some commuters out of their sleep, newspaper, Blackberry, etc.
After a few minutes […]

Bobby the Conductor and the ‘Long’ Rider
There’s a funny bit on Derailed about Conductor Bobby’s interaction with a photo-shy VIP rider en route to Fairfield. Bobby, who possesses a Gump-ian knack for bumping into famous people, took the ticket belonging to Justin Long, who’s best known either as the cool Mac hipster in the Mac/PC commercials, or as Drew Barrymore’s boyfriend.
Long […]

Bear Market Slams Chappaqua
Peter Applebome, who pens the sometimes illuminating Our Towns column in the NY Times, sets his sights on Chappaqua train station today and the financial workers, Bear Stearns and other, who board before the sun comes up each day.
The pilgrims from Chappaqua trudged in from the cold drizzle Wednesday morning and gathered in drowsy silence […]

A Dream Commute
I had what may be my first-ever commuting dream last night. I was trying to catch a 5:46 train, only it appeared to be an Amtrak, and the station wasn’t Grand Central–which I guess makes sense of it was an Amtrak.
The ticket lady gave me my ticket, a large, rectangular thing that had something the […]

NY Times Remembers Fallen Newsstand Operator
The NY Times picks up on the tragic story of the blind newsstand operator who fell to her death on the tracks at Croton-Harmon yesterday.
“It was a routine that Theresa Fiorentino followed for as long as anyone could remember.” writes Fernanda Santos. “Seven, perhaps eight steps from the newsstand to the elevator, a downward ride […]

Blind Newstand Operator Killed at Croton-Harmon
This is just awful in every way. A blind 75-year-old newsstand operator was killed at Croton-Harmon station this morning after falling onto the trucks and getting hit by an Amtrak.
Therese Fiorentino had stepped onto the platform for a smoke and then fell onto the tracks, where she was struck by a southbound train at 8:31.
Fiorentino […]

The Trainjotting Restaurant Review: Iron Horse Grill
The Missus and I had the divine–and exceedingly rare–pleasure of an actual dinner out without Little G rolling Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater all about the place. We chose the Iron Horse Grill, a cozy, tasteful joint located inside the old Pleasantville train station house.
Located smack in the middle of the village, Iron Horse Grill […]

Can Someone Please Help This Guy?
He said Trainjotting was “great,” so we’re inclined to help the fella.
While Googling train directions from New Haven to the New York
Botanical Gardens I came across your great site. This query may be
answered somewhere in the Trainsjotting archives, but I couldn’t find
it: Is there a way to make the trip without transferring at Grand
Central Station? […]
