When the modern Grand Central Terminal that we know and love opened in 1913 (following its grimy precursor, Grand Central Station), the upper level of platforms was for long-distance travelers, and the lower one for suburban commuters.

The upper level was known as the Kissing Gallery for all the smoocherific behavior that accompanied the long-distance farewells and arrivals.

Think of that next time you see a couple mugging down in the concourse.
