WSJ: Reverse Commute Mostly Sucks
The Wall Street Journal weighs in on the commute from city to suburbs, and finds that it’s exhausting, it’s expensive, it can ruin your social life, and it just might help your career. In short, when all of your friends are hitting happy hour and some funky bar around 6, you’re sipping a Bud tallboy […]

Monetize Me
Some eagle-eyed readers of Trainjotting have noticed the new ads adorning the top of our pages. Indeed, Trainjotting has partnered with with Google to feature ads that aim to have something to do with the content on the page, which results in the reader clicking on them to buy stuff, and Google’s stock climbing north […]

Word of the Week: URINALYSIS
URINALYSIS: \YOU rinn al is is\ noun: Careful inspection of a surprisingly open seat on a crowded subway for bodily fluids or spillage.
USAGE: Against all logic, there was an open seat on the uptown 6 during rush hour, but upon closer inspection, someone had clearly marked their territory.

F Train’s Star Turn as “Old Slow Coach”
A few months back, we took advantage of having missed the train to pick up a replica F train for Little G for Christmas. It was in Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central, in those booths they set up for Christmas shopping.
Created by “Munipals“, the little F subway car cost $10 and was compatible with the […]

‘Mileposts’ Scribe Rocks Out to Led Zephyr
There appears to be an unfortunate mistake in the February issue of Metro-North mouthpiece Mileposts, which landed this week. The Courtesy Corner, which whimsically reminds riders to keep feet off the seat, clean up their shit and use their cellphone sparingly–usually with some seasonal theme–starts out by cooing about “dreaming of Jeanie with the light […]

God Builds Houses on the 6 Train
Woman of 45. Trim afro, dangling earrings, ankle-length print dress.
Proseletyzing to a full 6 train.
Let God build your house
Your labor will not be in vain
365 days a year
If you let God build your house
Your labor will not be in vain. [Editor’s note: Jesus was supposedly a carpenter.]
Fear fear fear.
Fear I’m gonna lose my job.
Let God build your house.
Let […]

Someone Forgot to Take Their Metamucil
Got off the 6 train and exited on Park between 26th and 27th.
I’m doing the regular high-speed slalom through pedestrians when I feel a whack in the middle of my back (technically, my knapsack).
I assume it’s a co-worker, because that’s what you do to a friendly co-worker when he flies by you on the sidewalk. […]

Word of the Week: MISREMEMBER
MISREMEMBER: /MISS remm EMM bur/ verb: To have an incomplete recollection of events from years past, whether it’s a hazy late-night ride home on Metro-North, or a discussion of your use of human growth hormone with your best friend.
Usage: I thought I’d been to Rye train station years back, but when I went there last […]

The Gruntlization of America
We’d previously reported on careerbuilder.com’s dramatic enveloping of the Grand Central staircase leading to the subways with its new “Be Gruntled” ad campaign.
The campaign took another step in Grand Central today. I passed two guys in “Be Gruntled” t-shirts, large bags of “Be Gruntled” schwag at their feet, chatting near the stairs under Michael Jordan’s. […]

The Fare Hikes Are Coming! The Fare Hikes Are Coming!
Metro-North left some handbills behind for riders last night explaining the fare hikes that arrive March 1. “The vast majority of monthly and weekly commuter rail tickets will increase between 3.76% and 4.25%,” reads the “New Fares” flier.
(Am I the only one that thinks that the fare hikes would be less if Metro-North didn’t have […]
