Next Stop, Middlesex

As a reader of this blog likely knows, we’re suckers for a good transvestite on the train story. Toward that end, our conductor friend at Derailed has a rippin’ good yarn.

Hi, I like your blog, but I don’t think this post has enough sensitivity for what is really a sad story, at its heart.
Although I’m happy the conductor reacted with the minimal level of compassion/understanding for him/her, I’m not sure I’d characterize this story as a “rippin’ good yarn”. I mean, even if you don’t know a lot about gender issues, you have to realize that a man driven to live his life as a woman, a fact which he can’t expose his children to is a pretty sad story. In fact, it’s likely that his desire to be a woman caused him to become divorced meaning he can only see his children on a limited basis. Given that she purchased her monthly pass to use as a woman, this doesn’t seem like something that she is doing on a whim, or that it’s really accurate to call her a “transvestite”, which generally refers to someone who dresses up as the other gender on a temporary basis, but still generally lives as thier biological gender.
I realize that not everyone has as much interest or understanding in gender issues as I do, and I’m certainly not saying you’re a bad guy for treating this as just a curiousity, but I wanted to let people reading this know that gender issues can be serious and very sad.
