Where’s That Metal Barricade When You Need it?

As I mentioned the other day, a metal barricade was placed between those going into Grand Central from below and those descending from Grand Central into the subways.
The barricade was there Monday, gone yesterday, and gone again today. Coincidentally, I noticed that yesterday and today featured the worst buildup of foot traffic at the top […]

I Thought My Commute Sucked Vol. XI

“Talking Transportation” columnist Jim Cameron details two truly dreadful Metro-North rides in the recent past in Westport Now. (Lead story in Westport Now today: “Person of Color Seen at Pier One.”)
Both trips from hell appear to have happened on one of those Metro-North offshoot spurs, as in, not on the main New Haven line. A three-car […]

HAT&T TRICK: \HAT trikk alt. HAH tee nn tee trick\ noun: Getting three cellphone calls over the course of a single ride on the train.

Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Bag!

Filthy Mark is a friend from high school, given the nickname thanks to his formerly Falstaffian appetite for certain vices. When Filthy Mark joined the NYPD about a decade ago, the moniker was tweaked to Filthy Narc. That made us laugh, but didn’t ultimately catch on.
Filthy Mark and I have been playing phone tag, for […]

Over Herd in New York

I’d mentioned before the logjam at the top of the stairs heading from Grand Central down to the subways. Well, the city has done something about it.
This morning, for the first time, commuters were greeted with the steel barricades more commonly seen at Puerto Rican Day parades and, going back a bit, Yankee World Series […]

The Drag Queen Returns!

There (s)he was on the 7:16 to Stamford last night, all 11-inch heels and fishnet dress and tights with the ass cheeks cut out.
Yes, the giant black drag queen was shaking up the stuffy decor on the Metro-North again, brushing his blonde wig in the vestibule as riders peered over their Posts at this most […]

Straphanger Joe Ventures Out of the Subway

Sari of Mass Destruction
It’s not the subway but it is part of the New York City transportation system.

I went to visit Lady Liberty with my son and two other families with kids recently. The park where the ferry left from was pretty crowded with tourists. The line to get on the ferry was long […]

Mind the Gap. No Really, Mind the F***ing Gap!

The much-feared gap between train and platform claimed another victim early this morning, as a woman tumbled under the platform in Rye (more like Whiskey & Rye) around 2 a.m. New Rochelle Man Mugged… I mean the Journal News…has the story.
Lucky for the lady, who presumably is very, very thin, the conductor saw her […]

I Saw Something, Said Something

They duked it out next to the steps of the 6 train at 28th Street and Park.
He was a black man of about 30, in a Yankee cap, baggy jeans and an oversize black bomber jacket.
She was about the same age, with freckles on light brown skin, in jeans, a denim jacket, and clunky white […]

Tennis, Anyone?

I got this emphatic answer to my question about the mysterious tennis court in Grand Central. Apparently, this appeared on yelp.com.
Recently, I had a unique experience at Grand Central that I will never forget. My friend and I were riding the elevator up to the Campbell Apartment and he was telling me that it’s a […]
