A hearty web welcome to Nathan, who recently launched his blog “A Straphanger Emerges.” As the name indicates, the blog focuses on riding the subways, and all of the unintentional objets d’art found therein.

I don’t know Nathan, but I think I’ve got him pegged. Young guy, writerly ambitions (note the word “plethora” in his Welcome note), new to New York City, smitten with all the sights, sounds and smells flying about.

“I waited nearly half an hour for my train,” he writes about stumbling upon a few subway musicians. “Usually I’m frustrated and antsy, but tonight was different. The atmosphere was intimate and I hoped the train would never come. ”

Contrast that with, say, Trainjotting, from a jaded old guy who already did his time in Gotham and now toils in the ‘burbs, and uses his blogosphere real estate to showcase the minor annoyances that stoop a man’s posture over time. Nathan hopes the train never comes, Trainjotting writes 300 words about how it was five minutes late.

Nathan aims to battle Straphanger Joe for the funkiest subway columnist in the city. Rock on, young Nathan.
