Overheard on ‘Overheard’
From Overheard in New York:
Hardhat: I don’t know if I’m going to heaven; I don’t know if I’m going to hell… All I know is I have to change at Jamaica.

Catenary Calamity
Yes, the New Haven line is up to its old tricks. The catenary wire has decided not to play nice with morning commuters, so there’s no service at all New Haven line stops from Larchmont to Greenwich.
No city-bound service, that is. Riders at the six affected stops are encouraged to head west to Stamford to […]

Bike to Work Day!
Yes, Bike to Work Day was rained out last Friday, at least for me, so I dusted off the old Schwinn (it’s actually an old Trek, but we’re trying to dissuade bike thieves) Tuesday, and had a nice little ride to and from the train. Enjoying a San Francisco-esque hill wending downwards to the station, […]

Hipsters Jeer, Bomber Fans Cheer
In today’s commuter news, L train riders will wait until 2010 until an expansion of the L fleet is fully operational, and Yankee fans get their very own Metro-North stop near Yankee stadium around June 2009.
The new station will be a 10-minute walk from the Yankees’ new home, which is currently being built, and will […]

Word of the Week
KEYED UP \KEED upp\ adjective: The state of heightened anticipation commuters get as their stop approaches, which sees them remove their car keys from their pocket and position their fingers on the ignition key so they’re ready to drive as soon as they arrive at their automobile.
USAGE: This chick on the 6:33 was so keyed up […]

Metro-North Counters Delays With…Shorter Delays
Metro-North is hard at work to avoid the annual late-fall fiasco known as slippery-rail season, which means falling leaves leave oil on the tracks, cars skid and have to be taken out of commission, and cars are so packed they resemble the mosh pit at the old Coney Island High for much of November and […]

Bike to Work Day Cancelled!
At least for me.
My aluminum stallion was primed and ready to go this morning, but Mother Nature failed to cooperate, with a drizzle this morning and a forecast of steady rain all day.
Doesn’t Mother Nature realize that this whole Bike to Work thing is essentially for her? You know, cut down on emissions, save the […]

Hobbling Through Hartsdale
Despite MTA service advisories saying that everything was fine through Chappaqua amidst yesterday’s tornado-ish weather, there was all sorts of hell to encounter on the 6:10. Of course, the one day a friend (Joey From 5D) joins us on the train for a visit, we were treated to the worst ride we’ve experienced in seven […]

Gratuitous Advertiser Plug Vol. 1
It’s weird, I woke up this morning and had the sudden urge to learn more about Iceland, look up an old girlfriend or two, park at the airport and fly somewhere exotic, buy some insurance for my neighbor’s poodle, and figure out the cause of those intermittent heart flutters.
I can’t seem to figure out why.
Oh yeah–those new ads […]

Progressive Government At Work
With tomorrow being Bike to Work Day and all, I called Mount Pleasant Town Hall to ask where I might lock my bike up at the train station, in advance of my heroic ride tomorrow morning. The convo went something like this:
Me: “Hi, I’m curious about where I can lock a bike up at Hawthorne […]
