Campbell Scoop
Posted by TJ under Campbell Apartment, Grand Central
Fun article in Monday’s NY Times about redesigning the Campbell Apartment. If you’re not familiar with it, the Campbell Apartment is a lounge buried inside Grand Central Terminal where martinis cost like $18. The allure is the fact that it’s hidden, and bringing your friends there makes you look like a person in the know.
Here’s how New York City’s hidden bar progression goes. When you’ve been in the city a year or so, you take your friends to Chumley’s. When you’ve been here a few years, you take them to that La Esquina joint down in Tribeca. When you’ve been here a long time, you take them to…geez, I have no idea what’s cool anymore.
Anyway, what we learn from the Campbell Apartment article:
1. Campbell had a piano and a pipe organ in his place.
2. Campbell kept his pants in a humidor because he hated wrinkles.
3. The place was not, in fact, Campbell’s apartment. It was his office.
